Passing of Bruce Hill

Mar 18, 2024 —

Dear colleagues,

It is with a profound sense of sadness that I share the news of the passing of Fresno City College Professor Bruce Hill. His daughter, Anne Marie, informed us that he peacefully departed this world last Friday.

Bruce dedicated over 17 years of his life to the students of Fresno City College, serving as a faculty member, Academic Senate leader and President, and cherished colleague. He brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, having earned his juris doctorate from UCLA and worked as a certified probation officer before joining FCC’s faculty in 2006. Though teaching was his "fourth career," Bruce often expressed that it was undeniably the most fulfilling one. At his division retirement gathering last semester, he recounted with warmth how he found his calling in community college education.

Throughout his tenure, Bruce tirelessly advocated for excellence in educational practices, serving on the Academic Senate and tirelessly supporting his colleagues for the betterment of our students. His dedication to providing caring instructional support and mentorship to his colleagues, often at the expense of his own scheduling needs, was a testament to his selflessness and commitment to our community.

I had the honor of working alongside Bruce at Fresno City College when he served as Academic Senate President. He was a true gentleman, collaborator and colleague, fierce advocate for students, and all around wonderful human being.

Thank you, Bruce, for your unwavering dedication and service. Your absence will be keenly felt, and you will be deeply missed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carole Goldsmith
Chancellor
